HOMETOWN

By Jenn Powers

August 2017

A day when sea meets mountain:

when ribs crack apart

to reveal ancient

hearts

The unforgettable sphere of long ago:

fields of weeping willows and fireflies

classrooms of desk chairs slick with

sweat

To find the bones unburied:

resting at the pond’s edge

scrubbed clean by

time

Here I will be:

a statuette in your childhood garden

marked by the neverending cycle

of an empty cafeteria

the payphone

the slam

                        quiet quiet quiet

on the last day of school
